Automotive filtration

Filtration manufactured within the group and supplied alongside the lubricants it protects — because a filter and an oil are one system, and specifying them separately is how intervals get shortened.

The filter and the fluid are one system

Filtration is routinely purchased as a commodity while the lubricant is specified carefully, which is an odd division given they determine each other’s performance. A high-capacity oil holding contamination in suspension makes demands on filtration; a filter with insufficient dirt-holding capacity shortens the interval that the oil could otherwise have sustained.

Specified together, they can hold a longer interval reliably. Specified separately, the shorter of the two governs and the operator pays for capability they are not using.

What determines filter performance

Manufacturing inside the group

Filtration is built within the group rather than factored, for the same reason lubricants are blended rather than bought: it keeps specification, quality control and traceability under one roof, and it makes a service problem traceable to a batch.

Supplied as a pair

Where an operator takes both, we specify them together against duty — ambient range, contamination exposure, load profile and the interval the operation actually wants to run. That is more useful than either product optimised alone, and it is the practical argument for buying them from one place.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why specify the filter with the oil?

Because they determine each other's interval. A filter with insufficient dirt-holding capacity will shorten an interval the lubricant could otherwise sustain.

What actually sets the service interval?

More often the filter's dirt-holding capacity than the fluid's stability, particularly in high-contamination environments.

What is bypass and why does it matter?

A valve that allows flow to pass the element when it loads or when the fluid is cold. It protects supply but means unfiltered oil is circulating, so bypass behaviour is part of the specification.

Does the group manufacture its own filtration?

Yes, within the automotive platform, for the same reasons it blends its own lubricants.

Is the highest efficiency filter always right?

No. Efficiency at the particle size where wear originates matters more than a headline figure, and excessive restriction can drive bypass.

Running shorter intervals than you should?

The filter usually decides, not the oil.
